This map was inspired by desire to show a historical narrative through a concept map by transposing one over a timeline. I originally intended to map out the historical development of the welfare state from the 19th century to the present. I ran into two serious problems, however: my scope was far too large, making it nearly impossible to include everything and leading me to cut the project short upon reaching World War I; and second, the complexity of the historical developments overwhelmed the capacity of simple concept-verb links to display — the final project was neither clear enough nor complex enough. Possibilities for this type of concept mapping remain, but would require more sophisticated software and a better, more narrowly-defined goal.
