This map seeks to provide an overview of the entire project. It thus needed to a) provide a summary of the ideas explored in other maps, b) provide a space for some important concepts that found a home nowhere else, c) allow connections to be drawn that individual maps might not show, and d) not be overly complex and allow for quick orientation.
The theories of Esping-Andersen form the inescapable touchstone in any attempt at this kind of overview of comparative welfare states. His geographical and typological division of the ‘three worlds’ of welfare capitalism provided the basis for the left and bottom-middle parts of the map. A more detailed examination of his typologies and various amendments thereof takes place on the linked detail maps. The rest of the map explores the fundamentals of ideas and concepts that are further elaborated in the linked maps.
